Intubation and Rapid Sequence Induction- Understand some of the basics.

You stand at the bottom of the bed, or peering around the curtains to see what is going on. But you don't really understand the process.
Let me help!

What is going on and what are they all doing?

It's one of those moments in Intensive Care which always catches a lot of peoples attention. When we hear that the patient needs to be intubated suddenly the tension in the unit changes. Senior nurses start to move more quickly with very definite objectives in mind. Equipment starts to appear from no where, a lot of which you are not familiar. Drugs are drawn up as the patient is prepared.

Then it all goes quiet and calm (hopefully) whilst the actual procedure takes place. Drugs are given, there is a pause and then the tube is inserted. Everyone looks at the monitor and then there seems to be a collective sigh of relief as the Doctor declares the tube to be in.

But what was it all about? In this module I will help you understand the process and why things happen the way they do.

You too will then become an important member of the team!

What will we cover?

With 70 minutes of video and a 50 minute podcast we start by understanding the many reasons why we need to intubate the patient at all. It might not be just because their airway is compromised. There are other things to consider too.

Then we will look at the anatomy of the airway to help us better understand what it is the person intubating is going to be looking for and why something like cricoid pressure might be important.

Next is the positioning of the patient and the use of the bag-valve-mask, which is often done poorly in untrained hands.

We then learn about the drugs needed and why we use them. Here there is the chance to listen to a podcast I made with one of my good friends Dr Nitin Arora when we talk about the different drugs we might use in certain circumstances.

The equipment will come next. We use a lot of it which you may not be familiar with, and an appreciation of each piece will make you a better practitioner.

Finally we talk about the actual intubation process and, through the use of a checklist, take you through from start to finish.
